"I don't care."
"Eustass-ya, this is too much," Law said, shambling himself back onto the ship deck, trying to get the other captain to listen before he was flung off one again. Luffy had rebounded back as well, looking nearly as distraught as Law felt.
Kidd didn't look up, just staring at the deck at his feet. "I'll tear it all down. I don't care. Let me be the bad guy. I'll finish everything."
"Gizao, you're not the bad guy," Luffy murmured.
"Of course I am."
Luffy and Law exchanged an uncertain look.
"You went back to Wano for this ship," Law prompted, "Why?"
"I knew what they had us digging for. I could feel her down there, calling me." he admitted, "But I had the Victoria to go home to. She's gone now. So I got a new home."
Law's stomach dropped, heart sinking as he reflected on his own Polar Tang now scattered on the ocean floor.
"What did you do to Wano, Gizao?" Luffy worried. Robin had told him her and Law knew that Pluton was under the country. That's why they decided not to bring the wall down in the end.
"I wanted to flatten it," Kidd admitted, flexing his fists, staring down at his hands, "I wanted to tear the whole mountain down and sink it in the ocean. But Kaido's stupid son ... I couldn't..."
Even if Yamato couldn't talk Kidd out of reviving an ancient weapon, it appeared he'd at least convinced Kidd not to murder a country to do it. "See," Luffy offred, "You're not the bad guy."
He scoffed, and the metal rippled under their feet, flinging Law and Luffy off the deck again. Bepo and Luffy's crew watched worriedly from the Sunny as the two captains returned to the deck in front of the last captain.
Law nodded at Bepo, having heard the mink's distress even from here. They'd lost so much recently, Law's poor navigator was stressed to the max watching this play out. "Where's your crew, Eustass-ya?"
It was like watching a puppet loose its strings. Like Doflamingo releasing someone from his power. Kidd stayed on his feet, but he slumped forward, hands dropping slack to his side. A few peices fell off of his prosthetic.
There was no one else on the ship, with his haki and devil fruit, Law could tell that easy. He hung his own head as the man stayed silent. Luffy had taken a cautionary step closer, the gentle look on his face falling at what he saw on the captain's face.
"Kidd-ya..." Law breathed, allowing a moment of kinship in their shared grief as he saw the tears streaming down the young man's face.
"They're all gone." He said faintly, as if holding the words back had been him holding onto the hope he wasn't true. "Everyone... there's no one left."
Law had Bepo. Some of his crew might still be alive. There was a chance he could reunite with them. Kidd though...
"I just got them back. and I lost them again. and i.. and I can't..." he hunched in on himself, and Luffy was able to close the distance, wrapping Kidd up in his arms, holding tight.
"My family is gone... everyone"
