mekachu04: world anvil summer camp (WA SC)

KidoKira Collective

Another gang to rise up in the underbelly of Kutzk, Kidd and Killer of the Scrap Yard took the trash side by storm by both the level of violence they responded to conflicts with and sheer young age of the both of them.   Kidd was a genius when it came to finding treasures in the trash funds, and Killer joined up with some of the madams to work with the brothels to get better, safer conditions for the sex workers and places to go for those who didn't want that life anymore.   It doesn't mean living under them was fun and roses; Kidd was short tempered and prone to impulsive acts of violence, and Killer was ultimately little better. They were not the type to be open to negotiations, and defended what was theirs with a murdourous drive.

Territories

The Scrap Yard had been a no mans land since the first toxic waste started to wash ashore, long before any current residence to the island where around. Even so, there where always people who found themselves there when there was no where else to go.   From city walls to the ever expanding shore line of debris, the Scrap Yard would come to align under the Kid Boss, a violent Scrap Rat whose ability to find value in the trash lead him to being one of the wealthiest small time bosses on the island. Along side him, was Killer, a street worker with her own trigger anger whose loyalty to the Kid Boss inspired others to turn to him.   Kidd and Killer would build up the old light house as a base of operations, with Heap kids and of the Scrap Rats showing up for shelter and safety as the violence in he city ramped up

Foreign Relations

Wire
Kidd had started an uneasy alliance with a man named Wire in the Northern Slums who was a reliable purchaser of precious metals; Wire would warn him about raids from the inner city, and would give the group reasonable prices on grains and crops being farmed in the north - before they passed into the city to be taxed.
Heat
Heat was the Boss of the Night Market - the underbelly of Kutzk to the south east. He and KiKi had the longest beef, Killer having been caught trespassing years ago and the two coming to nearly fatal blows again and again over the last decade. In a moment of weakness and fear, Killer found herself teetering on the edge, and Heat had the opportunity to end the feud and let Killer die on her own and found he didn't have it in himself to walk away.
Victoria

Athair

Kutzk Wars

With the death of Victoria, Kidd declared war on the city, Killer supporting him fully in what could very well be a suicide mission. All either wanted at the moment was to watch it all burn. Several other low bosses heard the whispers but either supported the statues quo or didn't think they stood a chance. Only Heat and Wire showed up, and the the four lead their combined crews to a bloody conflict that ended with Kidd sitting on the throne of the city.

Chapter

And that how things went. Survival was the name of the game in the Heaps, and that what they did - survive. They got lucky enough to fall in with an uneasy understanding with one of the larger packs nearby - one without an alpha to rile Killer up - a dozen strong of omegas and betas in even numbers. The pack leaders were a tall tall tall beta named Wire, and his omega partner Hearth, named for his tenancy to light things - and people - on fire and stand over the flames until there nothing but ashes left.

Hearth and Killer had not gotten on well in the beginning; both would bear the scars of the other for the rest of their live. It was one of Hearth's more recent heats that had them laying down arms as it were. They'd been just about at war at that point, both Hearth and Killer gunning for the other's head. Killer had gotten the jump on the omega and while the two tried to murder each other, Killer had staggered back, hand over his noise, hackles raised.

"You smell awful," he had complained, making a face like he was going to retch. Killer'd actually clawed at his own tongue, like that would make any difference.

Hearth - skin crawling and senses overwhelmed - had snarled back, "You're not much better; week old milk would be less offensive to the senses."

Actually, Killer's scent had gone ripe too, a sour unhappy cloy. That was Hearth first inclination, that nagging feeling Killer wasn't a beta after all; Wire was a beta, half his crew were betas, and they'd never smelled so strongly of any emotion. He'd been ready for that night to end horrifically at that: ambushed outside his own nest by a rival alpha. Hearth's two options were to hope Wire hurried along and stopped this from getting bloody, or murder the boy and hope his pack didn't retaliate.

An inconceivable third option presented itself when Killer put his blade away, face still twisted as Hearth's smell apparently the worst thing imaginable to him. Hearth was a little offended. "Where's your stupid pack..." Killer had grumbled, growling under his breath, staggering away from what he was realizing was Hearth's nest and starting to stalk back and forth a few yards from the entrance.

After a moment, Hearth sat at the edge and watch him. Killer had snarled at him once, but went back to agitated pacing. There was no way he was a beta, Hearth concluded, wincing as he watched the blond start to pick and claw at his arm as he paced, excess energy needing to go somewhere. Hearth couldn't help but be a little satisfied that Killer was mauling the arm Hearth himself had tried to burn off him in one of their more infamous encounters.

"You're bleeding," Hearth offered warily. Adrenaline and fear had taken the edge off, but as things calmed, his heat had not slowed down. Where was Wire?

"And you smell. Go in your nest before you attract someone else. Where's Wire?" the young man demanded, and if he didn't smell like rot rolling in poison, Hearth would have almost been touched at his concern.

Pomp would find them first - his nose flared at Hearth's distress. Killer pulled his knife on the tiny omega, and circled him like a vulture.

"Killer," Hearth warned, unsure what footing the two of them were on anymore. But heat or not, Hearth was not going to let Killer go after any of Hearth's other omegas. Killer was volatile on a good day, and now... now Hearth worried about the omegas in his rival's pack. He hoped they knew what they were getting into, keeping a loose cannon alpha like Killer in their midst. His first rut was going to be the end of that family, Hearth was calling it now. All pent up and overdue... He'd probably murder the first omega he tried to bond with at this rate.

Killer was panting, scenting Pomp, and with him partially distracted, Hearth slyly reaching back into his nest to pull one of the pistols Wire had gotten him in case of emergencies.

Killer make a groaning snarl at Pomp, towering over the man, and then pointing at Hearth with an air of anger that could curdled milk, "In heat!" he punctuated the remark with a stab of his hand, "Why is he alone!? Where is Wire?"

Wire again, huh.... either Killer respected the beta more and was demanding an audience or... and Hearth was starting to realize, the beta's smell on him was strong enough that Killer had picked up on who he spent his heats with. He slipped the pistol back into his hiding spot.

"Pomp... Please go find Wire..."

Pomp remained frozen under Killer's scrutiny still, until the interloper growled at him and snarled out his own, "Get Wire!" which send him turning heal and fleeing.

Just the two of them again; Killer paced, growing more and more anxious with each loop, an awkward grumbling growl directed at Hearth with each passing. Hearth's own skin was crawling - his own heat wasn't going to be in full swing for some time yet, but an interloper outside his nest had him just as unhappy. However, it was the longest the two had tolerated each other's presence before, and Hearth did find it somewhat fascinating.

Hearth drew his knees up to his chest, resting his chin on them and studied his rival, "Killer-san..." he'd try for some politeness, just this once, "How old are you?"

Maybe he was younger than Hearth was giving him credit for... most presented by 12 under normal circumstances, but the malnutrition and poverty on their island pushed that to 14 or so even for those better off. 16 was the latest anyone Hearth had known of ever presenting. But maybe it was because so few of them lived longer than that in the Heaps. It was hard to guess peoples ages, living outside stability like they did. Pomp was well into their twenties, but hardly taller than a child. Killer could be anywhere from 13 to 30 for all Hearth knew.

Hell, Hearth was younger than most people thought - barely 20 himself but with the weight of too many winters spent hungry and cold.

Killer did not answer with words, but the defensive hunch in his shoulders gave Hearth an idea he wasn't any older then himself, the reaction too childish still.

"Have you had a rut yet, Boss Killer?" he asked, watching his face for the answer he would not get words for. Killer snarled at him, bitter and angry and the smell was like death. No he had not, and he was not looking forward to it. But he did not deny that he one day would - he offered no insistence that he was beta like his pack mates assured Wire over and over again on.

Chapter 3 : Crew : Daybreak

Her time spent as Kamazo had been well spent, Kidd came to find out. When Killer was allowed freedom from her handlers to go assassinate whoever Orochi was cross with at any given the time, she took as long as she could possibly get away with, scouting and mapping out every part of Wano she could. The two of them slipped away from the Punk in the quiet morning, Killer moving through the scattering of towns and countryside like the shadow of death itself, Kidd following her lead just like the old days. They moved through Wano without so much as a second glance from the locals, even as Killer took them dangerously close to the center of one of the town centers.

She lifted food from a stall so smoothly, Kidd himself almost missed it, even as she passed the pilfered meal back to him. By the time they slipped back into the shadows, she'd snagged him a second round and was awkwardly shoving rice into her own mouth as they walked.

It wasn't just the food, Killer knew where every one of their crew was - had even known where even he was - in her time as Orochi's puppet, and had spent what sanity she'd had left pulling strings and trading favours to get their crew moved around and taken care of.

The indiscriminate killing had never been the hard part;  Killer would do it all over again for her crew without batting an eye. On the surface, it wasn't even the favours she'd done that bothered her, although they'd shaken her more than she'd admit. No, it was that her ability to compartmentalize and cope had been completely screwed once she'd eaten that fruit, and with how lost she'd been when Kidd had first found her, he knew the lucidly she had now was held in place by the barest of tethers.

But she was holding it a death grip, only the softest of chuckles escaping when she waved her free hand to the first of many work camps they would visit, just as desolate and gloomy as Udon had been. Kidd waited for her to compose herself before pulling his own hand from her, feeling out the fencing and weapons and piping that made up the compound, mapping the camp out in his head.

Killer had taken Kidd to Wire first; their tallest commander spotting them before the guards did, and immediately turning on his captors. It seemed what Orochi had forgotten was the Kidd Pirates were only placid because they believed he held their Captain's life in his hands. The sight of Kidd walking free meant all bets were off, shackles were thrown down, and Kidd walked out of there with not just some of his crew but a good number of forced-laborer locals there to help.

He was... not sure how to take that turn.

Wire got them weapons, and freeing Heat was next.

While Wire had been quick, efficient and clean in his killings, Heat took one look at his crew come to free him, and turned on Kaido's men with all the fury he'd been forcing down since they'd been subdued on their own turf. He'd been the last of the four standing against Kaido, and Apoo, the one to watch Hawkins take a knee as he himself was beaten down.

Wire had fallen first, taken out by Kaido before they'd understood they were under attack. Killer had been next, that bastard Apoo having moved like he'd watch her back, to uphold an alliance they'd just sworn to, only to step aside to let her take Kaido's club full force to the head. Heat had been frozen in place, uncomprehending as her helmet cracked and splintered in a single blow. Kidd had fallen next, blindsided by rage, even his fury no match for an emperor. Hawkins had knelt then, surrendered. Heat felt all eyes to him, both his enemies and crew alike, and had answered the only way he'd known how; he'd spit a fireball at the monster, and then knew no more.

Since waking up, he'd been with a few surviving crew mates, forced to work. He didn't know if Wire or Killer had survived, only being told Kidd lived. And would only continue to live only so long as they didn't cause Kaido's people any trouble. So against every fiber of his being, Heat had kept his mouth shut and head down. He'd tolerated their abuse, horded supplies and weapons, and waited. and waited. and waited.

And then a wild man stood at the gates, dressed only in boots and kilt and the red of fresh spilt blood. Heat did not freeze up this time. He was not even sorry to have left so few for his captain to get to fight.

Seeing Wire dressed in the same drab prison garb as himself was disheartening, but the blood splatter on them both livened it up pretty well. Heat then broke one of the biggest rules the crew had, and pulled Killer into a hug without warning. He'd not seen her face when her mask had broken, but the fact she was still bare broke his heart, and the only way to keep from staring was to put her out of his line of sight.

She gave an uncomfortable giggle, a sound so strange to him he didn't place it as her making the noise at first, as he cupped the back of her head in his hand. Solid bone, whole and unbroken, unlike his nightmares. Frighteningly more, was she allowed the embrace at all, only Kidd ever granted the privilege of being tactile because of the long history between the two. Her own hands warm against his back as she tucked in under his chin, returning the gesture.

In his panic, Heat looked to Kidd, demanding answers to what their vice-captain had been forced to endure. Kidd's face was carefully blank; Wire's pinching as he drew his own conclusions.

Kaido's men here had died too fast; Heat would be sure to make it last longer at the next camp, grinding his jaw as he rested his head against Killer's for a brief moment longer before pulling away. He kept his gaze lowered, frowning as he took in her getup.

"Boss Killer, you really do not have to indulge Captain's atrocious taste in patterns, you know." Although, she at least wore the shirt better than he did, even if it was poorly fitted for different reasons.

"You know a place I can get a good pair of jeans?" she asked dryly.

"All leather here I'm afraid. But," he nudged the wooden sandals she was balancing on, "that does include shoes. Lets find you something better?"

As the prisoners raided the supplies, trading out ragged linen for furs and leathers, and even if it wasn't quite their style, Heat and Wire made it work for them. Killer also got boots, but - with Kidd's blessing and don't think Heat didn't catch that look he gave her - stayed with the clothes she had. Kidd also passed on clothes, and admittedly, he looked fearsome enough as is, so it worked for him too.

"I do have one last thing," Heat admitted, as they made ready to leave to march on to the next camp. Some of the locals would go with them, but most had gone their own way already. As long as it caused chaos and a headache for what passed as authority on this island, Kidd didn't care either way.

Heat's camp had been mostly responsible for metal work, and that was both the ore being mined on the island, and the melting down the scrap from other projects. Or other ships.

He and the few crew mates that had been assigned here and been slowly salvaging little bits that they knew had been taken from the Punk. Enough for Kidd to build a respectable new prosthetic. For Wire to have a trident that would work for his taller frame. Older punishers that had been retired; not because they were broken but because Kidd and Killer had perfected a new design. Still perfectly functional, and between Kidd, the weapons on hand, and the camp's tools, new blades had been procured and affixed easily. The strange new smile that never seemed to waver on Killer's face seemed genuine the first time as the machine spun to life in her hand.

"Don't say thank you yet," Moai grinned, before hoisting up a wooden crate that had clearly been buried in the ground until recently.

Most of the crew had never heard Killer laugh before, something she'd stopped doing a world ago, long before they'd given up trying to kill each other instead of turning their ire to bigger targets. So it took them by surprise to hear her burst into both tears and cachinnations. Kidd's look to them was a clear and present warning not to react, as he took the helmet from the open crate in Moai's arms, who worriedly looked at him to make sure he'd not done something wrong.

Kidd loosened the latches on the spare helmet, before holding it up for Killer. Heat could see in his eyes he was furious about the situation, but was doing an admirable job in acting like nothing was amiss. Killer lowered her head to let him put it on, the Captain pausing only to ask, "Bangs?"

"Don't care right now," she laughed back, little mirth in her voice despite all. And despite the laughter and tears, the moment the metal was carefully latched back into place, her whole body eased just a bit, relaxing enough for all to see just how tense she'd been up to that point.

All told, they hit eight different labor camps that night, before all that was left was the most delicate extraction: getting the last members of their ranks from the pleasure district.

The locals show them where to sail to keep the Victoria Punk out of Kaido and Orochi's prying eyes. They told Captain Kidd to give them a few days before they can get the ship refitted with more of the day to day necessitates.

What they can do now, is give the Kidd Pirates a ships worth of fishing nets and someone even finds her main sail, enough to maneuver her to safety. Temporary main top-gallant and Mizzen-mast have also been secured. The promise of food and hopefully enough pieces for Kidd to rebuild the water filter to come with the night's sun set.

For the time being, the crew were camped out in the lower deck, reworking the nets into new hammocks. Attacking the labour camps would take some time for word to get back to Kaido and his men. A similar approach on the pleasure houses would not work, would get all eyes on them before they were ready for such a confrontation. The plan was for them to sneak into the Flower Capitol to get the last of their people, but they can't do it running on fumes like they are. They will rest the daylight hours away, and start out at dusk.

Those of them that have been sailing with Kidd since the start know their way around mending nets; Killer practically lived on the docks before her and Kidd starting running together, and twenty years hadn't lost the muscle memory of knots and weaving as she worked.

She was second only to Wire - a man who's fibrecraft skills had kept them clothed and stylish for the last decade. The two are working back to back at the moment, deft hands having already finished four hammocks apiece.

When suddenly Wire froze, looking around the room in a panic.

Kidd noticed immediately and started looking around to see what the man had spotted, only for Heat to let out an soft, "oh...."

Kidd looked between the two in confusion, before Heat motioned him over. Killer had drifted off at some point, hand in mid knot, slumping back against Wire. Now the taller man was the only thing keeping her upright, her breath soft and steady from under the helmet.

Some of the other crew had taken notice, chatting dying off and movement easing until the room was comfortably quiet. Jaggar took one of the finished hammocks and strung it up in Dive's usual place; top placement, in the middle of everything, yet out of everyone's way. Safest place in the room. Heat took one of the few blankets they had and lined the netting with in, knowing first hand the nightmare the coarse rope would do to one's hair.

Kidd lifted Killer up, the new prosthetic he'd assembled since they got back to the Punk taking her weight with ease. Disk J helped hold her hair out of the way when he settled her down, making sure it didn't pull or tangle, setting in the safety of the blanket Heat had put down, before going back to his own work.

"Is it safe for her to sleep in the helmet?" Compo worried, looking over but carefully keeping their line of sight under the hammock level. Kidd did not like that they had a point, looking down at his partner.

"Nobody's gonna go peeping." Gig assured him, "We wouldn't think of disrespecting Boss Killer like that."

Each turned back to their own work, giving Captain and First Mate their privacy, even in the middle of the room. Didn't judge either as Kidd fussed over the netting and the blankets before removing the metal shielding. Kidd tucked her helmet in her arms, frowning as his right hand brushed her forehead when he smoothed down her bangs. She was warmer than he'd like, and he pulled the edge of his shirt down to check her bandages. He needed to get her stitched up properly still, the skin red and splotchy where he could see. They didn't have clean supplies to rewrap her; if infection was setting in then they were in trouble.

Chapter

Living in the Heaps - packs are focused on survival first, comfort a distant thought that rarely made top five things needed for energy to be spent on. Kidd and Killer had gotten their foot hold in one of the fallen buildings by the old lighthouse when the last pack that laid claimed had died off - even if between the two they wouldn’t be able to defend a stake in the main building, they held their own on the old mechanics shop.

Maybe the split chemicals from the broken tower and the fumes of rot that roiled in the sea buried under the trash that covered the shore made it less appealing for other packs from testing the Pup’s territory.

But Kidd and Killer made their nest up in the broken mezzanine of the attached building, rusted staircase dismantled to build a somewhat sturdier ladder up into the little balcony. Papas fit in with them just right, and for three is was perfect.

Three of Papas’ heats later, and they have a dilemma. There is a stranger at the shore, bigger and older than all of them. An omega that smells so sad, staring out to where the sun reflects of the poisoned water of the sea, their face distance. Killer takes the plunge, approaching first. He’s a waif next to the other; an omega by smell, but as large as imposing as any alpha next to his teenager self.

Compo is twice Kidd’s age, and had failed once again to win an alpha’s attention. Their family pack is fed up, and they were not welcomed back this time. Compo is lost in every sense of the word, no where to turn.

So Killer brings them home.

Compo is too big for their pup nest - and they are very adamant that it would be inappropriate for them to enter one anyway. Papas looks uneasy at that, but with Killer and Kidd’s blessings, the two make an omega nest on the floor under the mezzanine.

Kidd finds it a delight, hanging over the edge - often upside down - to chat with them, while their little pack grows. Compo is much stronger than the rest of them - and they are knowledgeable about the Night Market that exists outside the city walls on the far shore. Kidd has a nose for good scrap, and soon they are loading Compo up with their treasures to sell.

The thought that Compo might rob them itches the back of Papas’ mind, but Kidd tells him not to worry. Compo is Pack.

Compo brings food and clothes and blankets with them when they return. Soon - the sad little shop with its broken windows and crumbling walls is a nice little home. The wind doesn’t bite, the sun doesn’t scorch, the rain can’t soak them bone deep anymore.

Then the girls arrive.

Genders are funny things - they don’t really matter, just a label taken from the fish and giant folk with their dimorphic genders from birth. Those folk had puberty but it didn’t change the gender, there was no presenting or uncertainty while waiting for it to happen, just emphasized the differences between them more. But the words had worked themselves into even Kutzk vernacular; boy and girl, he and she. They‘re just words, but in same measure they mean so much too, for those who make an effort to pick ones for themselves. Compo may have opted out, but the other three were all very comfortable being called boys.

They’d never really met people who felt the other way. Who dressed in bright colours and soft fabrics, and painted lips and carefully styled hair.

Not long before it was time to ring in the New Year - two strangers tried moving into the LightHouse - two 18 year old girls who introduced themselves to the Pack as a bonded pair who loved each other, and don't anyone dare try and split them up!

They had declared themselves bonded a few months back, but while Hop is an omega, Hip is not an alpha, but a beta, and neither of their packs saw the bonding as real, and demand the girls stop seeing each other. When Hop refuses an alpha replacement offered by her pack, the two ran away instead, realizing their packs will never stop trying to break them up.

Only an alpha and omega can bond the traditional way; alpha’s have a secretion in their mouths - a gland just for bonding that reacts to the gland on the back of an omega’s next. An alpha will only taste their omega as long as they are bonded, everything tinges with the reminder of the one they sworn themselves too. Bonded alpha’s will remark that it effects their sense of smell too, making other omegas smell off. Once bonded, an omega will smell like their mate, a mix of their own scent with the secretion left by a bond, a hands off to other alphas.

Betas and omega lack this gland in their mouths, no scent to leave on a bite. Betas and alphas lack the gland on the neck, no way to hold the smell of their bonded to seep into their own smell. The best they can do is rub - exchange oils like pack does. To wear tokens of a beloved as a claim, regularly scented to remain potent. Beta smells are weak, but that didn’t stop Hip from wearing wristbands regularly, constantly swapping them out for Hop to wear. For her then to wear hairbands scented by Hip.

They were a pair, sold as a set - do not separate.

Killer and Kidd could have chased them away - the girls claim of territory far to close to their own Pack. Instead, the boys opened the doors between them, inviting them to their growing pack, to join forces as one family.

And thus they became a pack of six.

it is going to be a dark one. it's going to deal with assault, abuse, child trafficking, mental trauma/disorders, self harm, and a lot of hurt. some on purpose, some stemming from ignorance.
Major Character Death is selected but it's... complicated.
Do you remember when we used to dance?
And incidents arose from circumstance
One thing led to another, we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung

Chapter

Officially, it was assumed Killer was a beta.

Even the latest of bloomers presented by 16, but young Killer still smelled exactly the same as he had at 14 and hadn't seemed to present any postpubescent gender markers. He had an otherwise off putting smell that he’d been plagued with as long as they had known him - an unfortunately rotten sickly smell that never seemed to wash completely away and likely a marker of his poor health growing up on the streets the way him and Kidd had. A little dirtier, a little greaser, a little smellier than the packs that each member had fled from - but Killer opened his family and home up to each of them - what was some poor hygiene between teens when it was someone who would kill for you? There was a certain sick under note to it that made them all uneasy, but it wasn't like doctors were all that readily available to packs like theirs. And while Killer certainly wasn't always well, he didn't look like he was going to drop dead either. So their little pack had put it out of mind. Killer was almost 18 now after all, and not much had changed on that front.

All the same, unofficially, there was an undercurrent of whispers that he still might be an alpha - he was named Killer for good reason and unapologetically defended their territory, and Kidd, with a violence-first mentality that left outsiders on edge, and would have put him in a world of trouble had they not already lived in the dredges of society. He was grumbling, snarly, and short tempered. He got weirdly standoffish and confrontational during pack heats. He tolerated no alphas at all, even the ones on suppressants, to the point he'd got in the face of a shopkeeper who'd been watching Kidd in case he got sticky fingers - which he did - and nearly gotten them both arrested. Killer'd all but been banned from entering the city's inner walls before even Papas had joined.

The outer city's more shady Night Markets used to let him in, except these days it meant passing through the territory of Pack Punk, who'd had a beta who once mocked the way Killer laughed, to which Killer had tried to murder him right there in the street. The pack's leader had broken the fight up, but to this day, the two both operated on a 'maim on sight' mentality. It was at least a step down from the 'kill on sight' that had escalated to the rival omega's face being carved up, and Killer's arm being burned nearly off. Kidd had to get involved at one point, and everyone had taken a collective step back after that.

Kidd was an odd case - not a peacemaker but another rabblerouser - but he was still one hundred precent pup: no ambiguous sour smell like his partner, sharp as a whip in the way children can afford to be, jovial and good natured until he wasn’t and then he was just as brutal and merciless as Killer. However, as much chaos as he left behind him, he oozed a calm and charisma that went far beyond his pup state.

While growing, before puberty sunk in, pups had a strong ‘non-scent’ that adults often found soothing, pack or not. So much - it even dulled the burn and itch of an omega’s heat or an alpha’s rut. Some even went on to claim the ‘smell’ intoxicating - a drug of its own - but it was often just chalked up to someone having baby fever. Kidd’s was so strong, his smell even seemed to neutralize Killer’s sour sick smell in their living spaces pretty well. In pack cuddles and headbutt greetings, the rest of the pack had all learned to avoid rubbing up on Killer too much to keep it from clinging to them too, whereas Kidd could be as affectionate as he liked his their pack leader and still smell like nothing at all.

Two extremes on each side of the scale, yet perfectly balanced between them.

And so, for the most part, the crew - a loosely formed pack of mostly unbound omegas and two other betas - let it be. Even if he hadn't presented, Killer was a reliable member of their group and even if on the younger side, they turned to him as pack leader more often then not. And Kidd too - but no one wanted to admit that a feral 13 year old was co-leader of their little family.

Regardless, where Killer went, so did Kidd - the two living out of the other's pockets since time in memoriam. The rest of them had gravitated to them over the years - none of them had packs of their own anymore, either rejected for being found lacking or fleeing from unhappy families.

The only exception had been the first omega adopted in - Papas - who the boys stumbled across themselves as little more than children, by some mix of gut instinct and accident. The smell of distress and heat had been a strange sirens call of it's own, drawing the young duo in to find him crying for help even in the throes of his heat, being forced into a bond by an unknown pushy alpha. A barely 13 year old Killer stopped that in the act, an alpha too engrossed in Papas to watch his own back, and found a knife sunk in it a couple dozen times for his audacity. Kidd had crawled into Papas' ruined and trespassed nest - little more than nine at the time - and the smell of pup had soothed over the worse of things until Papas was clear headed again enough to be moved somewhere safer. Killer had stalked the area, oozing malice and the promise of death, puffed up and growling as they went, escorted Papas to their own little pup nest for the end of his heat.

Papas was the only one they'd sought out, but even as the oldest for those short few months, he'd never been leader. That was always the boys. Papas didn't remember much from those first months, his own head messed up and afraid. But there had never not been a moment where he didn't feel like he was pack, right from the start; Killer might have been 3 years his junior, but he'd taken Papas into their nest and defended him with the same furiosity he defended Kidd.

Other omega would join over time, unbonded and rejected, like Compo and UK, drifting aimlessly until the current brought them to the pack. The two had both been the most reluctant to join; Compo a full decade older then Kidd and four years older then Papas, the senior omega of their little pack up until then. But that also meant they had a bit more understanding of how the world worked outside of Kidd & Killer's trash pile territory, and the guidance was begrudgingly needed. Papas might have set their cycle, Killer might patrol their territory, Kidd might make the rules, but Compo was the de-facto parent, something that stood in place even now. On the otherside, UK was one of the last to join, a bitter and despondent 16 year old, marked up by his own hands after being rejected once again a bond even after sharing his nest with his alpha partner for years. He'd been collected by Killer the afternoon before the boy's birthday 15th birthday, Killer jokingly calling him his favourite birthday present to try and make UK feel more welcome, and eventually, UK understood that Killer meant it.

Hip had her partner Hop - who was a beta, their bond symbolic but no less important to both girls - and the two had been kicked out of each of their family packs because they'd refused to denounce the other. Having no beta minders at the time, the growing Pack Eustass was delighted to have the both of them, and were more than happy to let the two have as much space as they wanted or needed, even if they rarely took advantage of such premium space and nested down with the rest of the pack.

Bubblegum was actually bonded to an alpha - but he'd long since lost love for his partner, and it was bad enough with the alpha that he'd eventually walked out first chance he got. He'd end up following Killer back from the market one day after the younger teen stepped between him and his alpha. The alpha had tracked Bubblegum down and tried to publicly humiliate him into coming 'home' in front of the large gathering crowd. After the omega had repeatedly tried to escape the alpha and the growing crowd, Killer had drawn a knife on the overbearing alpha and threatened to gut them until they backed of. Killer proclaimed Bubblegum was his pack now, and the alpha had no claim, regardless of any bites left on the omega.

And then there was Quincy- a free spirit who rather liked being an omega, but didn't want to be bonded to any one alpha, any one family, any one space. She flitted in and out of their lives on a whim, coming and going with a shower of kisses, and every time she went to wander off, Killer assured her that they were always her pack when she was ready to come back.

Ska was the final beta of their little family- he'd been charmed by Kidd in the market one day and followed him home. Said he didn't have anywhere else to be. Killer had been the most wary of him - what grown man followed a child home? Killer knew too well what kind of man - but he was really just that mellow and never gave Killer any reason to run him off. He was a huge help during heats too, giving Hop a chance to spend more of it with Hip and playing nursemaid himself while Kidd got his cuddles in and Killer patrolled the parameter on edge and in a generally standoffish mood.

For the last five years or so, Kidd and Killer collected their people. A pack of six omegas, possibly three betas, and a pup running wild and feral on the outskirts of the city, laying claim to the battered lighthouse on the shore, and all the waste that washed up along side it. Kidd had an eye for finding treasures amongst the trash; scavenging, cleaning and fixing each thing as he went until one would never guess the condition it had been salvaged from.

Ska and Compo were the most skilled at slipping though the other pack territories to the Night Market to pawn off each treasure, earning them a fair amount of coin and any shortfalls were pilfered and raided easily enough to keep the pack living comfortably, even in squalor. Their nest was never lacking for indulgences, even if it did mean six different omegas having to bicker over how things should be arranged and smell and the weeks leading up to heats were a contestant passive aggressive fight on the arrangements.

And if their youngest beta ends up being an alpha too stuck in fight or flight to present properly, well, they'd deal with that when the time came too. Last year, Bubblegum had already volunteered to be Killer's first rut partner - going as far as to tell a horrified Killer to his face one drunken night that he'd be okay if they bonded too. In an attempt to distract everyone from Killer's growing mortification, Quincy had reminded Bubblegum that he couldn't be bonded to two alphas.

"Watch me," Bubblegum had doubled down, drawing a red faced Killer into his lap and clung to him possessively, giggling at Killer's attempt at a rumbling growl back at him, "Imma gonna have so many bond bites from this man, my first alpha's not even gonna be able to find their stupid mark."

Author Notes

i did no research into what other people where doing for omegaverse, just made it up as i went from what i remembered other people doing, and what I know about cats.... XD

This is a very.... strange story. I'm not super into omegaverse, so it was already weird to write for it... And i will admit, the story was originally born out of spite; some antis on tumblr picking on the darkfic writers....
but the longer i wrote for this, the more it became an exploration of something else, some dive into how scary growing up can be, SA aside, when you don't know what's happening to you. When we don't explain puberty and sex-ed to kids in a way for them to understand, and more importantly, in a time frame that actually is helpful to them. (even as far as the number of adults (men and women alike) in our society right now that have no idea how women's bodies work.)
when your (found)family means well, but their neglect is actually abusive, even if they don't mean it that way, and how ignoring mental health issues in kids and teens can destroy their lives.

i didn't know what to call orange mohawk guy so his name is Ska for this.
also, Heat is now called Hearth - thank you to sleepyjay at the One Piece Writing and Worldbuilding Discord for helping me with that,
and thank you to A.Grey for being an amazing sounding board for a lot of this. I'm still very sorry *this* was your introduction to omega-verse, and i hope the final draft makes more sense the strange ramblings i first shared with you
