he should be the oddman out; alistar didn't fit in with the samll group at all. Outside observerse would see him as the tag-allong. The pity friend. The party pooper.

And alistar was very away of the trouble thye could get into, and was quick to pint out flaws int heir schemes. and crolwey was quick to replan aorund them, a silver otunge at even his younge age. but he would also be the very first to defent alistars place in the group. yes, he was a bit of a wet blanket - but it wasn't tha he was against their adventures. he just didn't want them to end in trouble. he, essentially, made sute the fun lasted longer. he kept them from being obvious when stirring up trouble, and made sure that they never got pinned fr anything. with was veyr good becuase he was also the worse liar of the gourp. it was painfully obvious to anyone paying him attention when he was lieing.

fortually, he was also the more anxious in general, always twisted up in nerves around anyone older than him that he usually devolved into a stuttering mess. his nerves where not too unlike his lies.

On a more personal level, he was also, unfortually, most nervous around his family. there where also the group most ill preparied to tell his nerves from his lies, accepting his mis-truths with little sispisioun. Eve was pretty sure alistars mother was the only one who could tell the differance, and she wasn't around much.

which was a shame, becuase adam was pretty sure alistar wouldn't be so nervious in the frst place if she was. she might be cross witht he three of them, but she was a very patience woman most of the time, and before things went south, she'd been a lovely adult to talk to. adam missed that much mor ethan he missed playing in the family's garden. he also didn't like seeing his friend become more nerotic as they greq up. he also disliked the way the older siblings had becoe since they stopped visting - cold, distant and far too focuses on their reputationa nd piblic image.

alistar was like that too - more nad more every day, taking longer and longer each time they played to relax and jsut act his age. in turn it meant crolwey thoguht up more outragous games for them to play, and adam worried one day one of them would go to far. corlwey would get them in real trouble - or alistar would e too far gone to stoop down to playing with them anymore.

alistar was very careful never to let anyone know he'd fallen of the swings that day. Terrified of how his family would react, he'd snuck back ino his own home and pacthed himself up as best as he ws able. He was already a clild with a parcular dres tase - so long sleeves and layers where nothing out of the ordinary. he' probably overwrapped his skin knees and elbos but if he moved stiffy fo rhte next few days, no one commented.

the only real worry was the dark ugly bruise on his hip where he must of hit at somepoint - thought he whole thing was a mostly forgotten blurr by that point. it hurt a great deal still days later and was the last thing to heal and fade away.

he holed up in his room for the days it to heal, only coming out for his studies and lunhc. he even skipped dinner, owrried someone would see him wobbling about on the stairs; the pain enough to make him cry those first days. lucking, dinners where no really a big affair for the Phaelle household. they might have been - once, but it was long before nay time alsistar could remebr. and now adays, his siblings had such strang diets that he'd come to more or less fend for himself at dinner - leftovers to their meals at his disbosal. his mother more of less refused to cook a different meal for each of her child and if they wanted something, they learned to make it themselves. though she often still made several portions of whatver it as she wuld be eating, when she remmebered to eat at all, and usually alistar would potions himself a meal from those.

it wnet on until grazes and bruises faded. and then little longer after that. it might have celt going on - by then there was a routine in it that had started to be come comfortable, until there was a light scattered tapping at his window one afternoon.

adam was hiding in th shrubbery along the eat wall, chucking pepples up at his window. oh, if alistars sibling saw him there would be hell to pay! alistar didn't even bother with the windowd, scrring down staris to sneak out as quick as he could, a bit of a wild frantic gasping to his breathin when he reached adam's hiding place - the other boy beaming at him like he'd jsut won some grand prize.

"you mussen't be seen here!' alister scoled quitely, adam pulling him into the safety of his hidiing place. the two boys hugged briefty - partially in pulling alistar inside ad partially becuase there where young and such gestures where still aloowed at that age.

Alistar never did learn exactly where crowley lived, but Eve had the next best yard to play in once it was clear Alistiars mother was very much not renegging on her exit of the neighbor hood children.

Just as well - alsitars yard might have been the largest - with the most wonderufl places to explore -but it wasn't exactly filled witht hte things most children liked for their play time - like swings and slides and te such. and since alistar was the youngest child of the Phaelle household, there was little change of such play equipeemnt ever being installed.

but eve! her family had a wonderful play set-up. atleast, according to crolwey and adam's reactions. and eve seemed so very proud of showing it off, so surely, it must be. alastar would just have to take their words for it.

and.. he did like swings. maybe not to the access that his peers did - he certainly had no intentions of jumping off anything, so there for there was no need to try and go higher or fast enough to accieve any distande like his friends.

he'd been worried -t he first time thy'd gone to play at eve;s. alistar didn't get on well with his classmates at school, and while his mother naver gave any indiacation one way or another on him acting like his peers- alistars siblings where quite vocal about their family being above such shinanigans, and therefor, so should alistar. when they'd played int he Phaelle Garden, it had been fine - adam and ever where happy to make up their own adventures, and alistar had been incuded in every senario. he'd been worried - moving to eve's - that he wasn't oing to be welcom eanymore. he didn't really understadn how the new rules worked, and he was worried that the new crolwey would outshine him, leaving him forgotten as his play group moved past what he was comfortable with.

it had happened all to oftenbefore after all.

they still invided him, but... well, alistar found that the trio's new adventures where much more alighted with what colwey wanted to do - often dangerous, ridicous things; climbing on the outside of the strucutes, hanging upside down of support beams, doing down the slide head first, and , of cource, jumping off the swings.

it finally came to a head when crowley insisted that if alistar was going to swing, he needed to swing like a proper child - and had started to push alistiar much faster then he was comfortable with. the three started to chant for him to jump - crowley refusing to stop pushing until he did.

eve kept assuring him it was fun, adam standing out a ways, betting alistar could jump as far as he was. crowley keeping up his momentem, not allowing him to stop no matter how he tried to drag his feet.

he did finally - if only to make it stop. only - he'd never jumped form a swing before, especially not a moving one. his arms didn't quite know hoe to let go, and he fell more than jumped. his feet did touch down first, but he was thrown to his side quickly after that, not so much rolling as tumbling head over heels.

he landed not far from adam, the boy the first to his site to roll him onto his back as he tried to crul up and hide the tears. he felt humlitated more than anything - the pain woulnd't come until later.

eve was next, having stopped to retrieve the show he'd lost upon landing. as adam helde him sit upright, she quietly put his shoe back on for him. crowley had made it halfway to him but had stopped, looking worried.

i din't want to jump

I jsut wanted you to have fun

I was having fun! i.. not everyone needs to be recklase to have fun!

It wasn't recklase, it was swings!

just.. you go to fast for me, corlwey

there was a boy in the backyrad….

Alistar Zayden Phaelle glanced carefully back over to where his brothers where studing at the kitchen table; certain they where sufficently distracted, the young child made his wa to the window, hiding at the edge of the glass, curtain blocking him from his family, wall from the boy outside. it wasn't just one boy - the neightbor children, eve and adam, where back there as well, seeming throughly engrossed in whatever game the three where playing.

Alistar's mother adored the two neighbor children, often having them over or having one of Alistar's older siblings at either of the twos homes to babysit. He got on with them well enough, he liekd to think them friends even, but it did sometimes seem like she was around more when they where over than she was aorund for her own children. HE never said it aloud, but his face must have shown it once, becuase Stanford, his second oldest brother, had a deicdedly mena look on his face in responce, and simply told him, if he had a problem with i, he could always leave.

Far too young to be going anywhere alone, Alistar was frightened at just the thought. it also put a slight fear in his heart that at least one of his brothers did actually want him to leave.

It would gorw to be a thought that all of his siblings agreed, as he got older. but that was later.

now... now, ther ewas a boy in the backyeard!

he played some game invovling chasing with Alistars two friemds, the three runnng aorund in a wild abandonment that Gabreil often scoffed at. hooligans, he'd call them, with an unsaid expectation that he had better never catch alistar carring on in such a manner.

To Alsisas horror, he saw their game had escalated tehm into climing on the decorative mini-tree Alistar's mother had placed outside for the day until she had a chance to repot it and bring it back in. it was a ear thing to her - one of hte most forbidde things their family own as far as even looking at incorrectly, and now the boy was hanging off one of it's brances!

Adam, who had heard Alistar;s mother;s scheall about the tree many a times, looked at it in concern - likely recognising it despite it being outside instead of in the place of honour in the sitting room. he attmepted to causion eve from clmibing it, but in the end, she climbs after the boy - reaching out to try and 'tag' him it seemed.

So focused on the scene before him alistar never noticed the curtain shift next to him; not relaising until far to late that gabriel had found him, and had come to see what had drawn his attentin away. he looked on in horror, and then gabriel was running fo the back door.

there wans't much time, but Alistiar had to try. he waved deperately from the window, adam catching sight of him in the end.

it was too late - the two in the tree caused to to tip, and it went crashing on it's side.

Alistar waved fratically to the bck door - gabriel would be there too soon - and adamgrabbed eve's hand and dragged her out of hte branches and ran for the gate ont he est side.

the strange boy looked dazed where he'd fallen, and alistar could only watch on ind read as gabrel appeared at his side, his yelling catching the attention of the whole house.

His name, Alistar would later find out, was AJ Crowley. He only found it out when his mother took the young man's father to court to sue for the cost of the tree. Alistar never spoke to his mother about what he saw, refusing to back up gabriels inistance that adam and eve had been their too.

The two where never invided over agaon. His siblisng never babysat for them again. and the next time he saw AJ - the boy's face was a molted college of bruises that he refused to discuss. he was sulking down the path otuside alsitars house, just pasisng the est gate as alistar came home from a toutoors.

they made eye contact for jsut amoment, and AJ nodded to Alistars home, "well," he drawled, accent strange, a hint of a lisp, "sat went down like a lead balloon."
