when he was a young bachelour, mid twoenties or so, he had come home for seeking his forutne to help lay his mother to rest. their relationship had been... difficult leading the return to one of mixed feelings.
His father had left, or died - he was never really certain - when he was still very young, and as the baby of the family, there was little reason to stay once he reach adulthood, other than to placad his mother's since of empty nest.
He got along with his siblings as well as water and oil, and the whole funeral was a tenious affaid. but, it was his mother, and he did feel like he owed her to at least say good bye.
he didn't stick around, and never ment to come back.
excpept, once he return abroud, he slowly noticed that his collegues and friends mauting and growing around him,a nd.... he didn't seem to be keeping pacing witht hem. by thiry, he was starting to wonder... at fourty, there was defiantly something happening.
byt fivety, he didn't look a day older than he did at his mother's funeral, and he traveled home. a stone wall has been built around the whole twon.
no one else had aged either. right down to the edlers and the infants. no one had dide either.
he discoverd that anyoen who enters the town stops ageing. they also survive and heal from so far - everything. the town has been walled off to keep outsiders from finding out. from gaining the give too. they all agree it's too dangerous.
at this point, those already ageless can cpome and go witht htey please, but are warned to becareful what they tell and to who.
crowley leaves again. travels the world. 100 years later.
he checks in at home. he has no real love for the people, but he is lonely and he's tired of hiding. he learns that the elders are gone. and so are most of the children.
his brother tells him that if he finds that he can't take this gift anyore, there is a way to give it back, and to die. crolwey recoils.
he understands why the elders would choose that, but the children... it hurts to thunk about. he stays within the walls, but moves out as far as he can and isolated hiself.
he realsis ther eis one baby left. his mother is completely insane. he starts to worry aboout them both.
he sees the mother and the infant one day, walking deep into the middle of the walled area. he follows.
there is a stone dome in a clearing, the ground dead and paved over 100 paces from the dome. the woman walks up along the slope, reaching the apex.
and then her and the baby are gone.
allarmed, crowley ran up tot he structer, clambering up the stone to the top.
there is a circle opening at the top, grated over. but the slots where a foot and a half wide, and easily wide enough to slip down into.
there was crying deep inside. the child was still alive.
he couldn't see the bottom, jsut a deep blackness.
the crying stoppped with a crunch. crowley swollowed thcickly. he pushed away from the grating, amkign to return to his home.
the blackness started back at him.
a fleet of blue eyes, glwoing at hi in th dark, starting at him. bu the illumintation of the eyes showed another series of grating below. soemthing was ungulating down there, in the dark wit the eyes.
he ran.
he left hte wall, and kept running.
200 years.
his brother met him at the wall this time, opening the gates to a land frozen in time. they'd left his home waiting for him.
it took him 10 years to visit the dome. he brought a lanturn with him, lowing it into the depts to see inside better.
there was a second grate maybe tweny feet bellow. black arms reached out though the grate, dozens of them, grasping for the light, but clearly avoiding touching the grate below. the eyes grew into view a bit later, as some of the arms pulled back. they glowed blue still, staring up at him.
"waht ... are you?" he wondered. /why did she come here to die../ he didn't voice. /why did you kill the baby.../
/they asked me too/ a voice echoed in his head, seeting his teeth on edge
.... /will you free me?"/
