2025-01-24 10:16Janary 24there's a manic energy running though the workers, and Kidd doesn't care for it one bit. something has happened, everyone is scrambling, and while he's been given orders no one is actually telling him what's going on.
Finally, as he's helping load tackle in the back of one of the Charlotte's son's trucks, he spies a head of blond hair across the metal barricades and he's hoping fences, yelling for his friend.
"Kidd!" it sounds like Killer's been looking for him too - his friend grabbing his arm and hauling up over the last set of panels. Killer looks just as panicked, but there's a clear tone of relief at finding Kidd. Someone is yelling at the both of them, but neither of them pay the least bit of mind.
"What is going on?"
Killer's got a full face mask and goggle set up on - and he's frowning deeply as he pulls it off and works the mask over Kidd's mouth. It's a ridiculous looking thing and it makes Kidd think about some of the world war 2 movies they watch sometimes. Once Killer's sure it's fitting right, he's affixing the goggles over Kidd's eyes next.
"Killer!" Kidd is demanding, blinking in surprise as he realizes his eyes have been irritated and he'd not really noticed. other people are covered up too, and Kidd is noticed the haze that's started to build.
Killer is ignoring him, his dusk rag pulled up over his nose, and yelling back at one of big mom's boys who's trying to give them orders.
"Killer!?"
his friend is shoving him along and he's watching people start to drive away - the horses have been loaded up - people are downright fleeing, and Kidd is starting to feel panic setting in because even the Charlotte kids are leaving, and they never leave. Killer is pushing him toward where they've been allowed to park - the only truck still in the lot by the times they get there.
Killer's glancing over the lot once more before getting in. There's a few pieces of tack and such in the bed of the truck, and a box in the middle of the bench, Kidd peaks in to see the angry face of one of the barn cats and her kittens. She hisses at him and he closes the flaps again, looking at Killer - waiting for an answer.
Killer is still mostly ignoring him in turn, even as he starts the truck and starts heading out. Even with the windows up, the air in the truck is thick and Kidd understands with a start that it's /smoke/ - the heavy heavy clouds of it settling in the area. Kidd stays deathly quiet once he realizes it, the trees disappearing and the road he's known nearly his whole life vanishing into blackness.
Killer sits at the end of the dirt road, before turning towards town - traffic all going the other way. Killer's watching closely who passes the other way but he's not seeing whatever it is he's looking for and eases his way through the smoke.
One of the cars flashes his down - "Fire's this way!" they tell them."
killer gestures to Kidd, "His mom's this way - I don't want her out looking for us!"
The car driver doesn't' look like he agrees, but he says nothing more and speeds off.
"Killer?" Kidd asks quietly, unsure. Killer himself looks unsure.
"I.. We're almost to your mom's..." he says finally, and starts driving again.
the smoke is so thick the road is mostly gone now, and kidd
