there's something soothing about dragging skates over smooth ice. side to side; drag. scuff.

the rest of his team may the ice smooth and perfect. unblemished. it wont stay that way, but other than a flashy stop from time to time, the longer the ice remains pristine the better.

not for him.

perfect is dangerous.

slide to the left, drag the right.

repeat.

the small box inside the blue line is his domain, and he knows it as intimately as he knows the lay out of his childhood home. He knows how much power to use to slide on his knee from he outer box to the crease. how much to slide from one post to the other, how far to drop to cover the ice, how far to stretch to catch the corners.

the ice is rough and worn under his pads, starkly contrast with the smooth ice spread out before him.

Up on is skates, drag to the right. down on his knees, slide to the left.

Forward to the line, back to the crease.

the seconds tick down. the first period will start soon.

He team takes their positions before him and he scuffs the ice one more time

the fans cheer, the refs line up.

Shuffling in place, hunched. he's the heaviest player on the team, even before pads. now he crouches, making himself look as large as possible. as little of the net visible behind him.

The clock reset. 20 minutes.

the ref looks to his counterpart. check.

the ref looks at him. he nods.

check.

the first whistle, everyone leans forward.

the ice shines

the puck drops.

game time.
