Summary:... Cobra Bubbles.... I'm just throwing it out there - that man is freaking awesome... anywho - back on topic
The Winchester's have no children of their own. Due to a botched abortion five years ago - Mary Winchester will never bear her own child. So when John gets a phone call from a social worker in Massachusetts about the death of his second cousin - he and Mary find themselves taking in the woman's infant child.
*Title is referencing the song Dandelions by Five Iron Frenzy
Mary propped her head up on the back of the kitchen chair, watching John's face darken slightly as he talked on the phone. He stood at the counter, heavy hand taking notes as the stranger of the other end talked over something serious with him. He'd been annoyed when he'd first answered, but his mood turned down-cast and he looked hurt - rather than angry. Mary sat quietly with their cooling dinner, waiting for when John nodded to the phone, muttered a "I'll talk it over with Mary. You said you'd call in the morning? .... Yeah, after 8 would be good... Thanks.... You have a good night."
"John?"
He hung up the phone, staring at the paper's before him for a long moment. Mary got up then, a hand reaching out to brush his arm, "John, what's going on?"
He takes a deep breath, calms himself, before swallowing thickly and turning to her. His face is blank, careful and controlled. "That was a social worker - up in Massachusetts."
She takes the papers from the counter and leads him to the chairs at the table. Makes him sit down. "A social worker?"
"Uh.. Yeah. I.. I have - er had - a cousin up there. Well - second cousin. I dunno - I never met her. Name was Annie... Annie Wesson."
Mary sits down, chair pulled closes so their knees touch, "What happen to her, John?"
"Killed. Some.. Some freaks tore her up." She can see his face flicker - can see his imagination filling up all the voids in the silence. She knows this becuase her thoughts mirror his them, thinking back on horrible twisted bodies - torn into by monsters.
"Her husband's been arrested - apparently he found the ones that killed her. Six life sentences for it."
She squeezes his hand, and he holds on in return. Just in that, she knows if something ever happen to her, John would do the same. Her heart swells with love, but her mouth is filled with a bitter taste. "So, why call us? I mean, I know you're family, but you said you didn't know her..."
"No one left between me and her. No family left for any of them."
Just like her, Mary thinks, looking down at their entwined hands.
"They had a little boy. Social Worker's trying to find a family for him quick. Get him settled in with someone while he's still little. Get some stability under him before he gets old enough to notice it's not there."
"John...."
"There's still calls to make. Interviews. Paperwork. I told them we'd talk about it tonight. See what we think in the morning." He looks at her now - a hint of hope in his eyes, the corner's of his face soft and smooth, "Maybe - we could look after him until they find him a permanent family. Better us then some strangers? I mean - We'd be strangers too, but at least we'd be family already."
"How.. We'd... John..." She realises that his name has been the majority of what she's said in the last few minutes, and clears her throat, "How.... How old is he? What's his name?" She not saying yes - not yet.
"He seven months old. A year next May."
God - he's just a baby.
"Name's Samuel. Samuel Wesson."
She's not saying yes - but she's not saying no either.
