one fundamental thing that Crowley can't seem to articulate, and Aziraphale can't quite comprehend…. It that there's still a big part of Crowley that likes to lurk.

Shadows are the best for it, certainly, but even in the brightness of the park, Crowley has a fondness for standing just off the beaten path, just out of notable perception, and ... lurk.

he likes the misery of every day monotony, and dredger, as long as it's happening to other people and not him. and not to Aziraphale. usually. okay so he likes to goad the angel, and he definitely likes to wind customers spirits up into thinking they have a chance in hell of purchasing a book and then just watching the chaos unfold in the back ground. but he doesn't like the customers to WIN! and while he likes to win an occasional argument he certainly doesn't feel the need to win them all, especially if angel has brought up a inspired point that he hadn't considered.

but he still like to bask in human misery. to an extent. he doesn't actually want them to go and murder each other or anything, but a small amount of misery is good for the soul! or bad for it. adjectives have always been hard when discussing Hell, and now that he's retried, it hasn't come any easier.

But what the other demons didn't quite understand, and ironically is the part Aziraphale resonates most deeply with - is that some humans are miserable enough for several lifetimes and there's no real point to adding more on to them. it's better to focus on those who think their lives are grand, because smaller inconveniences trip them up on larger scales. and if your really crafty, you wile them like Aziraphale and rob them blind, giving every penny - and quite publicly too - to the down trodden so that their is no way to reverse the transaction as some kind of banking error without tarnishing their reputation to the point that any money they got back was meaningless because of how toxic it was to be associated with them.

Aziraphale found it grand because it was secretly good for others. Crowley reveled in it because it was dasterdly and left the - often deserite of it - human with no recourse but missary
