Day 54 - 967 words - Prompt: broken gate

cawley must be missing something, because while the humans seemed to enjoy these fruits and such they shared with him, they all reahter tasted the same. There was a stong… soething.. To htem, but it wasn't really anythng notable.

But he couldn't get his mind off of the three Eve had spoken about, and he really could not understand how adam though thye would die form eating form it. he started nosing aorund, and lurked in the shadows the next time the Almight camea around, supperssing his hiss only barely, and shoving down his displasure at hte situation to give a listen instead.

it was just the Almight and Adam this time around again, and it didn't take long to figure out where hte breakdown bettween God Adam NAd Eve had occured.

"you won't die," he assured her, their strol takign them back tt he tree. "I heard Adam and the Almighty talking. it's not the tree of life it's the tree of knowledge."

Her face scrunched up in confusion, and she looked at the tree, "We already know things - how can a tree tell us anything? it's .. a tree."

"Well, then how was it supposed t tkill yo?"

"I don't know, that what adam said!"

"Adam needs to explain things better. "

She touched the fruit hanign low, it didn't feel any different than the fruit from anywhere else.

"What i ndesttand, is the almighty doesn't want you to eat from it, becuas ehtne you'll be just as smart as them. not some dumb animal here in a cage. you'll think faster, more critically. be able to question them on thier bullshit - why are there only you too? how does this place exist? what's causeing these trees to grow in the first place?" /whyd you make me build stars and planets and galazies if you never see any of them but this one bright one?/

"God gave you the power to Name things, no one else but gods can Name things. they made you gods, and then keep you caged? why?"

She broke the skin of the fruit wiht her finger nail, the juice beading onthe surface. "ponce you've Named everything, then what? nothing happens here. you jsut going to do that for all eternity?"

There was no change at first, no lightning or thunder, no God striking them down, and eve looked at crawly slowly aferward, as it seeing him for hte first time.

"Oh Serpant..." she said finally, "What have we done...."

Adam found them not long after, eve crying as she tried to hide from him in the bushes, crawly failing misrably to concol her. The man found htem easily enough, and knelt besudie her, carefully turning her face to look at him even as she treid to turn away.

"eve... Eve, what has happened..."

whatever reastion crawly had been execpting, each turn was like a blow, as he watched this happy littler word he'd crawled into frature around him. "I made her eat." he said finally to adam, "It was me. i tricked her into eating from the tree. she didn't know. it's my fault."

Adam looked at him, face uncomprehending, before he slowly turned to face the tree. "This.. tree?"

Crawly knoded. Adam stood and faced the tree, seeming not the bitten fruit discarded from where eve had dropped it before. he cried, a low mornful noise tht rattled crawlys bones.

it seemed liek someone had fianlly noticed, and crawly could hear someone coming. Not God - but one of the guards.

sure neough, one of the angels entered the brush, sword alighting with flames at the sight of crawly, "Adam! adam, back away, t here's a demon!"

Adam,who had fallen to his knees, only respinded, by grabbing the fruit, and vicously bitting into it where eve's bit was. all three wisntesses let out some chours of 'Adam, no!' but it was too late, and adam force the bite down, throwing hte fruit away in haste. he looked a thte angel in definace, as if daring it to do something about it.

crawly used this as a chance to run.

The Almighty arrived no to terrible long afre than, and crawly burrowed deeper into the dirt; the angel might smite him back to hell, but he was certaint he Almight would earase him from existance this time. he'd mucked this one up pretty epically.

once he was certain the Almighty had left, he nosed hisway back to the surafce, trying to sniff out the humans. surely she hadn't earsed them, right? he told Eve sheould would die for this! crawly was many foul things, but he wasn't a liar!

he traced them back tot eh east wall, the stone blockign the scent path. they'd left the garden....

The angel from the tree was atop the wall, once again looking out. there was a thick wetness to the air,a nd a far off rumble in the skys. the blue of hte heavens was hidden behind dark grey clouds, the light of the sun faltering for the first time since it was created.

but the angel wasn't jsut keepting gaurd - they where lazer foced on something out there. something in the empty. but they'd raised no alarm, so it wasn't likely more demons.

Crawly slithered up the wall; might as well use the angel as a quick ticket back to Hell, let Lucifer know what happened. save crawly alot of time tring to figure out how to get back.

but the angel didn't so much as glance at him, eagle eyed still out into the empty.

Out to Adam and Eve.

She hadn't killed htem. at least not outright. crawly hadn't gotten his two only friends murdered becuase of his own jelously.

but still, they wheren't alone out there, a large lion tailing after them, and not in a feriendsly way. and there was nothing out there. just.. emty.

Well. that went down like a lead balloon.
