All he knew was that there was a boy and a baby. and he'd known all three of them were not going to get away.
tiny legs could not scramble over the broken building as fast as the men chasing them. He didn't know why they were being chased, only that it was not going to end well when they got caught.
they'd get away faster if they left the baby. He hated the words as soon as he spoke them, looking at the strange little monster he was holding. it wasn't human, but it was a baby. a baby that next did anything to deserve what was happening to it. it's not a crime to be born, no matter what you are or who your parents are. No matter what your parents' plans for you are, you deserve a chance at life.
"Kaina?" the other boy had prompted. That's what the boy had called him. the word was unfamiliar - all the boy's words were unfamiliar. but he knew enough to know that he was /Kaina/ and the baby was /pōkiʻi/ and le gamin was asking for pōkiʻi.
"I wouldn't..actually." he assured the other boy, but still handed that baby over, "/Le gamin,/ I wouldn't leave the baby... leave /Poki/"
the boy frowned,, giving him a look that more said he thought the other an idiot, but there was no malice or distrust left.
They ran and hid, trading off hiding the baby.
Eventually though - they were always going to get caught.
Boy was crying, still hiding with the baby, keeping it quiet as he got caught - they looked at each other. Boy moved to come out of hiding. He shook his head as the men grabbed him.
He never stops fighting, kicking and screaming. but he was one little boy against a horde of men.
and the look their captain gave him, the way his eyes wandered, made his skin crawl.
"I know the marines would give me a pretty beri for you," the man had smiled, his skin crawling that the man touched his hair. "But I can only guess what the Judge will give me if I keep you this way. a blank slate to start all over on....."
