"Your fruit lets you negate other devil fruit right?"

Blackbeard eyed the two supernovas with understandable suspicion.

"How long?"

"Excuse me?"

"How long can you negate someone's fruit?"

"Caribou tells me you were with him in Wano - in the quarry"

"I was."

"So you must know what they were digging for."

It's Kidd turn to look suspicious at the Emperor, turning his response over and over carefully. He could feel Killer tense next to him. The same laugh that Killer had tried to suppress when they'd closed in on Red-Hair.

The Killer before Kaido would have told him to walk away. The Killer who was still confidant in his own choices would have told him not to take this deal. But that Killer had also pushed to have them ally with Hawkins and Apoo against Kidd's own feelings. That Killer had eaten an unknown devil fruit on the chance it might let him save his captain and crew. That Killer was trapped in his own head and it took Kidd too long to notice he was afraid of making the wrong choice again.

Kidd knew it in his heart - this was a bad deal. This was not going the bring his crew back, this was not going to get them the Victoria Punk back. This was not going to get them any closer to the One Piece. But Kidd would let the world burn to get the fruit to stop fucking with his partner's head. Kidd would take this deal if it meant Killer would stop laughing; it if would give his partner just the tiniest bit of control over himself again.

The problem was, Kidd was naïve to think it would ever have been that straightforward.

Blackbeard's touch made Killer's skin crawl, but what was worse was the anger radiating off of Kidd, even if he didn't say or do anything to stop it.

Killer's only peace of mind was that Kidd didn't watch - too many eyes already on him - he couldn't bear Kidd witnessing this. Newly lost to the SMILE Fruit, his assault by Orochi and his court had driven Killer into true madness. He may have a better grip on the faux-fruit this time around, but he was not so sure he could go through this again without loosing himself. Going mad in front of his captain affrighting him nearly as much as Blackbeard pining him down, his men laughing as he was stripped bare - stripped of his mask and and clothes and his personhood once again.

Then Doc Q knelt at his head, weak sickly hands on his shoulders and smiled back down at him, "I briefly got to infect the Heart Pirates with Onna ni naru-byō... Captain really wants to see it up close, see how well it works. You don't mind, right?"

The doctor used his Shiku Shiku no Mi to force Killer's body to change, "Don't worry - Captain will make it go away when he lets you stop smiling," he reassured the pirate, words drown out by the bubbling hysterical laughter that was starting to brew.

The three-eyed woman watched him like a hawk the next time he came back, when Blackbeard's touch faded and the laughter returned. Studying him, watching for a weakness she could exploit. Sneering across the room at him when he was lain out across the mattress. Blackbeard just grinned down at him in that awful way of his.

"Will you call me Captain now?" Blackbeard had asked him the first time he'd voluntarily come back.

Killer had laughed at him - would have laughed even without the fruit, but at least he had an excuse to blame it on at Blackbeard's sour look.

"Kidd is my Captain." he'd said though, one of the precious few things he could still hold onto in defiance.

He'd thought the Pirate Emperor would be angry at the remark. He only laughed with Killer. "What's he the captain of, hm?"

He let Blackbeard touch him, hating it. But true to his word, the SMILE fruit's hold on him slipped away once again, and he could think clearly.

His plan didn't change. He could see no other way out of this.

Blackbeard could not be allowed to get the One Piece first - what ever was out there, Killer was certain, the man touching him could not be the one to find it. He might have the right idea, but he was too cruel. Kidd lashed out, killed civilians, decimated other crews because they mocked him. He was angry and felt he had something to prove. Blackbeard did it because he liked it. He wanted to watch the world burn. Or plunge it into darkness - seeing to his fruit choice.

This alliance was the worse idea they'd had yet, and the only short term bonus they had was Killer's clear state of mind. This would bring nothing but more pain to Kidd in the long run.

Killer's only goal for years was seeing Kidd crowned Pirate King, and maybe, he still hoped it could happen. But it would never if Kidd was shackled to Blackbeard. And there was only one thing forcing Kidd into this position.

Killer was going to remove that link. He'd set Kidd free if it was the last thing he did.

It happened quickly after that. Pudding had no interest in watching Blackbeard take his newest toy to bed again, and had turned away in annoyance when Killer had approached the Emperor in his room, fists clenching around his punishers as he tried to choke down giggles.

He let Blackbeard remove his helmet, brush his sweaty bangs away from where they clumped on his forehead. Grinned up at him manically as Blackbeard crowded him, ushering him back onto the emperor's bed.

Blackbeard might be strong and powerful, but what people typically underestimate is how fast Killer is. Shanks hadn't even understood, only barely having gotten past Killer on that fateful day because his haki had seen Kidd's attack before Killer had seen Shanks'. Killer had hit Kaido twice with his sonic scythes. There was no way was Blackbeard harder to cut than the King of the Beasts Emperor had been. He was staking Kidd's survival on it.

He used Blackbeard's bed as a launch point, punishers spinning as he kicked off it, burying his fists in Blackbeard's exposed gut before the Emperor's observation haki noticed the danger he'd put himself in. Muscles and organs ripped apart before he could slip into the darkness of his fruit for protection.

Shocked, Pudding looked up in time to see Blackbeard retaliate, snapping Killer's neck even as his guts spilled out.

Kidd's horrified scream cracked the air, and she was swept away under his conqueror's haki and knew no more.

Someone was uncuffing her. Pudding kicked out before she even opened her eyes, broken heel digging in to the unyielding form of one of Trafalgar's men. Jean Bart didn't react to her attack, sitting back to give her a moment before he resumed setting her free.

Blackbeard's place looked like it had exploded out, she was no longer locked away in his dark room but sitting with the sun on her face. None of the walls still stood any higher than a foot or two anymore, giving her a clear view of the pirates picking though the rubble. A clear view of her tormentor and his people, dead before her. Kidd's prosthetic arm had shattered, the shrapnel of it pining Blackbeard and Burgess' corpses down.

Kidd was still sitting next to them, the body of his own man in his lap.

Jean Bart followed her gaze, before pressing a finger to his lips with a shake of his head, helping her up, guiding her away.

A few of Trafalgar's people approached her once they'd cleared the buildings rubble. Apparently the Surgeon of Death wasn't just a fun moniker - he literally ran a crew full of unlicensed doctors, and she let them fuss over her.

"Captain will be here this afternoon," one of them was telling her, "he was already nearby, planning a raid to get us out. I'm sure he'll give you a ride somewhere safer."

Did they know who she was? Would she really want to be rescued by one of the men who'd killed her mother? She looked back to the room she'd been in since the lot of them had arrived here. The other man responsible for her mother's death was still sitting in there. She could probably convince the Heart Pirates to look the other way - let her have her vengeance.

The pirates had gone to greet their captain, leaving her alone for a few calm moments. She found herself standing in that room again. Kidd hadn't moved. Still sitting among the dead. He didn't even look up at her, didn't seem to care when she pulled one of the discard pistols up to point it at his forehead.

The skin there was paler - usually covered by band and goggles. He's been missing them since the duo arrived, but it hadn't been long enough for the sun to even out the thick tan line. He had freckles too. This close, Pudding could see them clearer, thickest across his broken nose and temples, dotting broken up only by the scars across his head where it look like someone had tried to rip the side of his face off, breaking up his hair line.

He needed a haircut too, the dirty locks limp and tangled. Without the eyeliner, the dark circles stood out clearer, the long nights taking their toll. Just a sad child - nothing like the monster she'd pictured in her mind since Blackbeard had taunted her with the news of her mother's death.

The gun wavered. Maybe she was developing a soft spot for pathetic men.

Kidd never looked up from where his hand was combing though Killer's hair. Killer, who was staring up at her, soulless blue gaze impossible to look away from.

Someone was behind her. She turned slow - gun still pointed at Kidd.

Trafalgar was standing at the rubble of the doorway. Watching her. Some of his men hovered nearby.

"You killed my mother." she stated.

Trafalgar only nodded.

She looked back at Kidd, sighting down the barrel at those freckles again, "You both did."

Nothing was said for a long moment, before "So, did you not want a ride off island then?"

She scoffed, but the tension broke, and she pulled the gun back to point the barrel skyward. "You don't worry I'll try and kill you?"

"I'd be surprised if you didn't, but no. I don't worry that you'll try anything. At least not right now."

She scowled, "What makes you so sure?"

"Because you still have other family. And I'm sure you're more worried about them than you are angry at me."

She tossed the gun away. But there was one thing... there was one thing she wanted to do first. She reached her hand into Kidd's head, she could feel Trafalgar tense, but he didn't try to stop her. She pulled Kidd's memories of her out, cutting herself out of his time in this hell hole. No one was allowed to keep her humiliation.

She was done, pasting things back together, ready to push it all back when one of the remaining memories caught her attention. Kidd could keep his own humiliation, his pathetic groveling. Pudding hoped he was haunted by it for the rest of his days for taking her family away. But she carefully cut around some of the other images.

She'd leave him with Killer's death. But she cut out Blackbeard's treatment of the other man leading up to that. Blackbeard was dead. Remembering how much of a creep he'd been alive did no one any favours, and even she wouldn't wish Kidd's memories of Killer to be tainted like that.

She pushed the edited memories back in. "I assume you're bringing him along too?"

Trafalgar had kept his silence while she worked. Up close, he looked as tired as she felt. "If I can get him on the boat."

She shot them both a dirty look and stalked past. Trafalgar's crew gave her space as she did.

Law studied Kidd's still form before him. If he hadn't seen the state the man was in before Pudding had rummaged in his head, he would of accused her of causing this. But Kidd hadn't seemed to notice - or maybe just didn't care - that she was debated on putting bullet in his skull.

Law would of stopped her. At least, he was pretty sure he would have...

Killer was covered in gore, but it looked like his own death was quick and clean, judging by the slack look on his face. He and Kidd had tag-teamed an Emperor by themselves. Trafalgar wasn't sure the extent of the Blackbeard's doctors skill, but there was a good chance that Killer's blow might have killed Blackbeard on it's own given time. Kidd just made sure; the double tap. He'd caught quite a few of Blackbeard's people in the cross fire after too, leaving the few survivors scrambling. Hell, Cloine had found Augrer impaled with his own rifle in his high spot when they'd been clearing the camp in the aftermath.

Trafalgar D. Water Law sat wearily next to Eustass Kidd, watched his hand brush the same patch of blond hair for a few minutes before looking up to nod his own people away. Bepo was the last to leave. The mink's face wasn't worried for Law, just. Just sad. Sad for Kidd.

Law didn't know what he would do if he lost Bepo right now.

He and Kidd were only three years apart, but sometimes... sometimes, it seemed like a life time. Kidd looked so young right now, his face unguarded and lost. His armour and war paint stripped away, left with a lonely boy who'd lost everything sitting next to him. Law thought of the pain of loosing Cora, of watching over Luffy after he'd failed to save Ace. That feeling of hitting the bottom, no plan or idea of how to pull yourself up again.

The room he summoned hinted purple this time, and Law crossed the line between them, gently closing Killer's eyes. Kidd reacted to that finally, his hand stilling in Killer's hair. Law did not look up to meet his gaze, but he could feel Kidd turning to look at him for the first time. Law focused instead on Kidd's hand, and gently took it in his own, pulling it away from it's solemn vigil.

"No." Kidd grunted, tying to pull away. Law wouldn't let him, "Lemme go."

Law entangled their fingers, holding tight. Kidd jerked again, "Fucking.. Let go."

Kidd curled over Killer, trying to keep his friend in place while also trying to jerk free of Law's hold. His voice cracked as it raised, "I'll fucking kill you, let me go!" The stump of his left arm beat against Law's shoulder and back. He'd have a new set of bruises come morning.

"Let me go!" Kidd tried to scream, but he was choking, and he tried to twist his hand free now. "Let me go! Killer!!"

Gritting his teeth, Law jerked Kidd's hand back closer.

"Killer!"

The man was dead; he couldn't come to Kidd's aid anymore.

"No! NO! Let me go! KILLER!"

Kidd's next inhale was ragged and wet, the surface tension at its max. "Please..."

Law closed his eyes, letting his grip go lax. Kidd didn't pull away.

"Killer, please..."

"He's already gone, Kidd-ya." Law's voice was soft.

Kidd's shoulders shook and he leaned forward, Law's hand still loose around his wrist.

"No one else can hear you but me," Law's words broke the dam free. Kidd sobbed.
