Disclaimer: Oh, how I wish i did
Warnings: er.. dunno what caused this... Usopp muses over the scar Buggy gave Zoro. I know the buggy mark was more from stupidness and not paying attention.. but us opp didn't know that. This has no point.. it's in my little note book, a collection of pointless rambles to distract myself from boring classes.
He knew Zoro had scars, but it never occurred to him how many the other man had until now, as he lay staring at the man's mangled skin.
Cuts from before they'd met, one particular one causing Usopp to slowly trace over it with his thumb. It caught his attention because the solo stab wound was massive on his back, compared to the parallel mark on the front. Maybe it was because there were no marks to overshadow it; no two foot scar that ran ragged to distract any onlookers.
Or maybe the reason that Usopp fell prey to the demand for attention was because he knew what this scar meant. He may not of known where is came from, or the story that might of been told to defend it, but Usopp did know one thing. It was a mark of Shame.
And as a man who lived only because he ran, Usopp knew a lot about shame.
It was a strange feeling. To know that the very cowardice that he was trying to escape was permanently displayed on the back of a man he was trying to be like. It should of filled him with dread. It should of shown him that he was destined to be trapped in his weakness, that no one could escape it.
But it didn't.
Because if Usopp was anything more than a coward and a liar, he was a master storyteller, able to weave a tale unlike anyone ever before him. His mind began asking, demanding to know, who the scar came to be. What demon beast could of given such a mark.
And in his mind, he, in all his glorious couragous essence, asked Zoro.
In a sober solemness of reality, he could see Zoro stiffen, pull away from the group, and remain silent.
He could see Chopper looking over in concern....
He could see Sanji straighten up, eye narrowing as he bit back a retort....
Robin would look up a little from her book, paused in her reading to watch....
Strangely, in his mind he saw Nami and Luffy reacting. He couldn't fathom as to the whys, but the reaction played out in his mind so perfectly, he didn't dare question it.
Nami'd get angry. At to who, Usopp couldn't fathom, and he'd duck away as she'd send them all off to do something, anything to dislodge Usopp's question from their minds.
And Luffy'd fallen silent, and in the chaos created by his navigator, the captain would approach his first mate, and in silence they'd both sit quietly. They talked in a single look, until finally Zoro just shook his head, and Luffy'd grin, and that would be that.
And the question should of doubled in his mind after that scenario played out in his imagination, if not merely for the fact that for all intents and purposes, it was plausible..
Instead, He shrugged, and pulled away, looking over the scars again.
Maybe his own dream wasn't that far away, he decided. Maybe one day he too could wear the marks of his past cowardinced, and yet still walk tall.
